Company Background

Sealtron SA, established in 2002, is a professional company that operates with three business units: Distribution, Manufacturing and Assembly. Sealtron is a supplier of wiring Harnesses and moulded plastic components to the automotive, white goods and utilities sectors. The supplier�s current interface with the automotive sector is in the aftermarket, but the supplier aspires of supplying into the automotive sector at a Tier 2 - level.

Project Scope

  • A project to support improved production management (i.e. planning, scheduling and control) is viewed as important. The project should include a focus on the requisite supporting elements of production management (including practices and processes such as 5S and visual performance management, as well as people development). Sealtron must also ensure that accurate measurement systems are in place.
  • A TQM approach should focus on optimising production flow and control through implementation of a Kanban system, layout design, etc. This will ensure improved inventory and logistics management.

Project Outcomes

  • A new layout / system / process was designed and implemented with the following in mind:
  • Kanban systems as far as possible to reduce material shortages
  • Less movement of personnel
  • Less inventory on the shop floor
  • Controlled systems / process flows

Impacts

With the new shop floor layout there was less travel between processes and flow was greatly improved. This caused increased productivity throughout the shop floor which is setting the baseline for future developments.
